Our Take

Breck is Colorado skiing cranked to 11. Literally -- the summit is nearly 13,000 feet and you will feel every foot of that altitude. Five peaks above a Victorian mining town that's all colorful buildings and breweries, with terrain ranging from 'hey this is nice' groomers on Peak 9 to 'why did I come up here' above-treeline bowls on Peak 8. Imperial Express SuperChair hits 12,840 feet -- highest chairlift in North America -- and drops you into terrain that makes you question your fitness level. But Breck isn't just for shredders. The park scene is world-class, beginners have real terrain to learn on, and the town is walkable and fun. Season runs November to May, sometimes June. Bring ibuprofen for the altitude headache. Worth it.

Why Breckenridge?

Breck is the people's mountain. A legit historic mining town, five peaks of varied terrain, and the highest chairlift in North America. It's not exclusive or intimidating -- it's just a really fun place to ski with a town that has actual character.

The Lowdown

Best for: Groups with mixed abilities and anyone who likes a lively town
Vibe: Colorful Victorian mining town with a young, energetic crowd
Snow quality: High-altitude Colorado snow, 355" avg. Imperial Bowl is above treeline and wild.
Town scene: Best Main Street of any Colorado ski town. Bars, shops, restaurants for days.
Value: Epic Pass staple. Reasonable by Summit County standards.

Local's Tips

  • 1.Peak 6 opened in 2013 and still gets overlooked. The hike to the top accesses serious alpine terrain without the Peak 8 crowds.
  • 2.Take the free BreckConnect gondola from town -- parking at the base lots fills by 9 AM on weekends.
  • 3.The T-bar on Peak 8 to the Imperial Bowl ridgeline is one of the most unique lift-served experiences anywhere. Don't miss it.
  • 4.Eat on the south end of Main Street. The north end near the gondola is tourist-priced.

Don't Miss

Imperial Bowl hike

Hike 20 minutes above the Imperial Express chair (the highest in North America at 12,840') for above-treeline bowl skiing that feels like you're on another planet.

Apres at the Breckenridge Brewery

The original location right on Main Street. Vanilla Porter is the classic order. Sit by the window and watch the ski-boot walk of shame.

Historic ghost town tour

The old mining ruins between Peaks 7 and 8 are visible from the chairlift. Take a guided snowshoe tour through the remains -- it's a fascinating piece of Colorado history.
