Hakuba Valley

11 ski resorts in one valley -- Japan's largest ski area and host of the 1998 Nagano Olympics.

Our Take

Hakuba Valley is Japan's largest ski destination: 11 separate ski resorts spread across the Hakuba valley in the Northern Alps of Nagano Prefecture, with a combined 200+ runs and lift systems that were substantially upgraded for the 1998 Winter Olympics. Happo-One is the showpiece -- hosting the Olympic downhill and super-G, with the longest vertical drop (1,071 meters) in Japan. Cortina and Goryu-Toomi have the valley's best tree skiing. Tsugaike and Hakuba47 round out the serious terrain options. The Hakuba snow profile is different from Hokkaido: more continental in character, with heavier snowfall in the Northern Alps (Japan Sea moisture combining with colder air) and temperature variation that produces both excellent powder days and freeze-thaw cycles. The valley's 11-resort spread means different mountains have different characters -- finding the right one for conditions on a given day is a Hakuba skill that rewards return visits. The international presence (Australian, North American, European) has been building since the 1990s, and the infrastructure has followed -- English signage, Western-style accommodation, and an après-ski scene that goes beyond onsen.
