Madesimo
The Val Spluga's Italian Dolomite alternative -- 60km of pistes and the Canalone expert run.
Our Take
Madesimo sits at 1,550 meters in the Val Spluga near the Swiss border, a north-facing ski area with 60km of pistes that has maintained its character as a genuine Italian ski resort rather than an international destination. The Motta sector at 2,948 meters summit provides the altitude, and the Canalone -- a steep gully run that drops through the mountain's exposed upper face -- is Madesimo's legendary expert terrain: consistently challenging, frequently closed by conditions, and the run every serious Madesimo regular wants a piece of. The resort is accessed from Chiavenna in the Lombard foothills and draws primarily from the Milan and Bergamo markets -- two hours from a major Italian metropolitan area with skiing that punches above its size on quality. The connection to Campodolcino below adds terrain and variety. Madesimo isn't on most international skiers' radar, which keeps it Italian in character and crowd composition -- the lift line conversations are in Italian, the food is authentic Lombard mountain cooking, and the après-ski doesn't involve Nordic DJs.
