Northstar California

The velvet-groomers mountain -- 3,170 acres, immaculate corduroy, and Truckee 10 minutes away.

Our Take

Northstar California is Vail Resorts' precision product in Tahoe -- a 3,170-acre resort above Truckee with the best-groomed runs in the region, a pedestrian village done right, and a ski experience calibrated to deliver consistent conditions rather than dramatic adventure. The Lookout Mountain area and the summit lifts give experienced skiers actual terrain to work with, but Northstar's identity is built on its intermediate and upper-intermediate groomer paradise: fast, smooth, wide runs that let you find your rhythm and stay in it. The snowfall averages around 350 inches annually, and the resort's tree-dense terrain helps retain snow depth better than open-bowl alternatives. The village is thoughtfully designed with car-free access, skating, and après options that don't feel like an afterthought. Northstar is the Epic pass resort you take your family to when you need everyone to have a good day -- not a heroic day, not a challenging day, but a reliably excellent day. The lift system is modern, the mountain is well-marked, and the grooming crew treats every trail like a demonstration project. For Tahoe-area skiing, this is the polish option.

Fun Facts

  • Northstar was purchased by Vail Resorts in 2010 and has since received major infrastructure investment including the Lookout Mountain expansion.
  • The resort's terrain is 60% intermediate -- by design. It's explicitly built as a progression and family mountain rather than a steep-terrain destination.
  • Northstar sits in a narrow valley above Truckee, which gives it some natural wind protection and helps the snow settle undisturbed.
  • The Northstar Village ice rink and pedestrian plaza operate year-round. It's one of the more complete base-area experiences in Tahoe.
