Val di Fassa

The Ladin valley's ski circuit -- Dolomiti Superski access, the Sella Ronda, and the Marmolada view.

Our Take

Val di Fassa is a Ladin-speaking valley in the Trentino Dolomites, accessed from Canazei and Campitello on the Sella Ronda circuit. The valley's ski area covers 120km of pistes across multiple interconnected sectors, with the Sella Ronda's 40km circuit passing through Canazei as one of its four valley stops. The Marmolada glacier (3,343 meters, the highest point in the Dolomites) is visible from most of the valley's skiing and accessible from the Arabba side of the circuit. The terrain is Dolomite in character: excellent intermediate groomed pistes through dramatic rocky scenery, with the Superski network providing access to 1,200km of connected terrain across 12 ski areas on a single pass. The valley's Ladin culture -- distinct from both Italian and German Alpine culture -- gives it a character that's immediately apparent in the language signage, the food, and the human-scale villages that pre-date the ski industry by centuries. Val di Fassa is the correct answer when someone asks for Sella Ronda access with local cultural character rather than resort packaging.

Fun Facts

  • Canazei on the Sella Ronda circuit is one of four valley stops -- you can complete the 40km circuit anticlockwise or clockwise from here.
  • Ladin is spoken natively in Val di Fassa -- a Rhaeto-Romance language with about 20,000 speakers across the Dolomite valleys.
  • The Dolomiti Superski pass covers 1,200km of terrain across 12 ski areas -- Val di Fassa sits at the junction of several of the most significant.
  • The Marmolada glacier is visibly retreating -- climate tracking stations here have become significant data points in Alpine glacier research.
