Whitefish Mountain Resort

Glacier National Park's ski mountain -- 3,000 acres, 300 inches of snow, and bears nearby.

Our Take

Whitefish Mountain Resort sits on Big Mountain above the town of Whitefish, Montana, with Glacier National Park visible from the summit on every clear day and accessible from the mountain's ridgeline in a more immediate sense than most ski resorts can claim proximity to a national park. The 3,000 acres have that specific Montana character: wide-open terrain, heavy snowfall (300 inches average), and an absence of the resort-industry pressure that comes from being close to a major population center. Whitefish is remote by intention. Alterra Mountain Company's Ikon pass acquisition of Whitefish brought investment and increased exposure to a mountain that was previously known mainly to Northwest regulars and destination skiers. The terrain runs from genuine beginner zones to the serious backcountry-adjacent expert runs on the north face, which get the best snow and hold it longest. The town of Whitefish below the mountain is one of the better ski towns in the Northwest -- independent restaurants, real culture, and a bar scene that doesn't mistake 'ski town' for 'theme park.' For Ikon holders wanting a Montana experience that delivers both terrain quality and genuine place character, Whitefish is the benchmark.
