La Rosière
The Franco-Italian pass resort -- linked to La Thuile for 160km of cross-border skiing.
Our Take
La Rosière sits at 1,850 meters on the Little Saint Bernard Pass above Bourg-Saint-Maurice, directly on the French-Italian border, linked to La Thuile on the Italian side to form the Espace San Bernardo -- 160km of cross-border pistes. The French side has reliably sunny south-facing slopes with views across the Aosta Valley, while the Italian side gets more northerly exposure and typically holds snow longer into spring. The cross-border skiing is the resort's primary appeal: a genuinely two-country ski experience that can be completed in a long day. La Rosière is a relatively small resort by French standards, with 40km of its own pistes before the Italian connection adds the balance. The village is purpose-built and functional rather than architecturally distinguished, but the skiing quality, the cross-border access, and the lower prices compared to nearby Tignes or Val d'Isère make it a smart choice for budget-conscious skiers who don't need a famous name on the lift ticket.

Fun Facts
- La Rosière sits directly on the Little Saint Bernard Pass -- the same Roman road that Hannibal allegedly crossed with his elephants (historians debate the exact route).
- The cross-border link to La Thuile means you ski from France to Italy without leaving the lift system -- customs and passport control don't apply mid-slope.
- La Rosière's south-facing aspect gives it exceptional sunshine hours by French standards -- spring skiing conditions arrive 2-3 weeks earlier than north-facing neighbors.
- The resort is 15km from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, which is a Eurostar-accessible ski hub connecting London directly to the Tarentaise.
